SCHOTT’s Acquisition of QSIL Strengthens Its Semiconductor Quartz Glass Capabilities

Industry News | Semiconductor Materials and Manufacturing

The semiconductor industry depends on a wide range of specialized materials that support wafer processing, equipment operation, and contamination control. Among these materials, high-purity quartz glass plays an important role in selected semiconductor manufacturing systems.

On January 31, 2025, SCHOTT announced the successful completion of its acquisition of QSIL GmbH Quarzschmelze Ilmenau. According to SCHOTT’s official announcement, the integration brought an advanced quartz glass production facility and approximately 275 employees into the company, expanding its capabilities in high-performance materials for semiconductor applications.

Quartz Glass as an Essential Semiconductor Material

Quartz glass is used in semiconductor equipment because it combines high-temperature capability with low thermal expansion and favorable chemical properties under appropriate process conditions.

Depending on the equipment design, quartz glass can be fabricated into hollow cylinders, process tubes, flanges, wafer carriers, and other specialized components. These parts support applications where dimensional stability, material cleanliness, and compatibility with the process environment are important.

For example, quartz components may be incorporated into etching equipment and thermal processing systems. In these applications, the material must meet the equipment’s design requirements while helping maintain a suitable processing environment.

The quality of the finished component depends on several factors, including raw material characteristics, forming technology, machining accuracy, surface condition, and inspection procedures.

quartz2Precision Fabrication and Component Design

Quartz glass manufacturing involves more than producing material with a high silica content. Turning the material into a functional semiconductor component requires carefully controlled forming and fabrication processes.

Hollow quartz cylinders, for instance, can serve as starting materials for additional machining. Depending on the intended design, manufacturers may need to produce specific diameters, wall thicknesses, flange geometries, and other features.

Precision is important because a component must fit the equipment correctly and perform consistently under its intended operating conditions. Poor dimensional control or unsuitable surface quality may create assembly problems, increase maintenance requirements, or complicate process qualification.

Manufacturing expertise therefore remains an important part of the semiconductor quartz supply chain.

Supply-Chain Resilience Becomes a Strategic Consideration

The integration of quartz manufacturing capabilities into a larger materials business illustrates the strategic importance of specialized materials in semiconductor production.

As demand for advanced chips grows, equipment manufacturers and semiconductor fabs must maintain access to materials that meet stringent performance requirements. Supply-chain resilience involves not only the availability of raw materials, but also the capacity to manufacture, process, inspect, and deliver qualified components.

Expanding production capabilities may help suppliers respond to changing demand, although actual supply availability and delivery performance depend on individual product requirements and manufacturing capacity.

For customers, evaluating a quartz supplier should include material specifications, production consistency, technical support, traceability, and the ability to meet agreed delivery schedules.

Implications for Semiconductor Equipment Manufacturers

The development highlights how material manufacturing and component fabrication contribute to the broader semiconductor ecosystem.

Quartz glass may not directly form the electronic circuitry of a chip, but it supports the equipment used to manufacture semiconductor devices. Reliable quartz components can help equipment manufacturers meet their mechanical, thermal, and process requirements.

As the industry continues to invest in advanced manufacturing, precision quartz fabrication and dependable material supply will remain important considerations for semiconductor equipment designers and procurement teams.
